View Full Version : Jambo dinner

How many people are we planning on this year? I need to start planning.
Also, suggestions about what we want served this year. I'm assuming burgers and hot dogs. And no beans this year. Potato salad was easy enough, we would just need to find what we need sooner than the morning of the dinner. I just think if we hand them a burger/hotdog and a little bag of chips its kinda of cheesy, but the italian in me feel that people should always be fed more. :D How about a pre-packaged cookie?
Remind me of what we decided last year about the condiments. Did we say no more large bottles/jars? And do we ant to mess with onions again? I think people used them, but was it enough to make it worthwhile? I know relish is easy.
Gimme your ideas, suggestions and comments so I can decide if I want to listen to you or just do it my way :D graemlins/roxy.gif

Burgers, dogs, potato salad, chips and a coookie.
The condom-mints is a rough one, on the one hand I'd hate to see a bunch of mustard packest blowing across the lakebed, but on the other we threw away a buttloat of extra stuff last year.....hmmmmmmm

suggest that people bring their own condiments. seems like a normal thing when you go out camping.

At least then if there is some left over people would be able to take it home and use it. No one has room for a bucket of mayo, unless you're using it for sex games. graemlins/roxy.gif

As this is my first year attending a Jambo, all I can say is I am pumped up. My rig has undergone a major transformation and I haven't driven it in a year. What a better place to test it than JV.. LOL.. With that being said, I like most are just happy to be wheeling with good people and friends and meeting other fellow wheelers from the web. I would be more than happy with burgers, dogs and chips. I wasn't even expecting a dinner at all, it's kind of a bonus really.
Just provide the basics, nobody is expecting a major meal with all the trimmings and condom-mints.. LOL..
I would suggest the large costco size bottles..

RJ You've never seen me cook before :D I usually make taco salad and lasagne when I come out to the Hammers. Burgers and dogs are childs play! But there is no way in hell I'm making lasagne for that many people!! graemlins/roxy.gif

graemlins/rose1.gif I think the chopped onions worked out great. The only thing I remember about them is that we needed serving spoons for the onions and relish. The little plastic ones sucked for that.
If you want to start checking for stuff that would be great! Maybe we can also do some checking when I come out in a few weeks? Even if its just a quick run thru Smart and Final or something like that. graemlins/roxy.gif

Tell me what you all think of this. How about those pre-wrapped utensils that either have a napkin or a wet wipe in them? Do you think the wrappers from that will be a problem, meaning they will get tossed on the ground?
We also need some trashcans this year. Last year we didn't have any for people to put their trash in after they ate graemlins/roxy.gif

YES..problem
I see plastic wrappers everywhere!!
I think all we need are plastic forks.. no need for spoons or knives. lets just go w/ forks and napkins.
and do you really think we need a deep fryer for the hotdogs??
didn't we just BBQ them last year??

Last year D-Toys dad brought his deep fryer and we filled it with water and boiled the hot dogs in there. It left a lot of open room for the burgers on the grill. It worked out really well.
And good point...forks only! Or sporks!!! :D graemlins/roxy.gif

Davia was kind enough to offer to make cookies so I told her to post it up here and see what everyone thought. I think it would be a lot cheaper. Didn't we check on those prepackaged cookies last year too and decided then they were too much and we couldn't afford it? I would say either cookies or rice krispie treats in a baggies or wrapped up in saran wrap.
I also just remembered I need to add another grill to the list. Last year one wasn't enough. graemlins/roxy.gif

Ok, Back on Topic.
We/I need someone to "Donate"/Supply Charcoal.
I've got the 'que handled, but we'll need atleast twice as much Charcoal as last year. However much we had.

I can easily hit Costco for charcoal as well if that would help.
And a Turkey fryer as well..

You are our new best friend! graemlins/bounce.gif But before you *really* offer anything, you do realize the number of people we are talking about, right? I think it was about 300 people last year. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
But what a generous offer! Thank you! :D graemlins/roxy.gif

The amount of people is not a problem, as long as I can fit it in my 4 runner. One case of product can handle 1000 people. I am used to feeding large groups, so just let me know what is needed. I would like to help support the event.
Thank you!

Thank you! You should be able to fit alot in a 4Runner. I fit food for 300 in my TJ last year. That was including having the spare inside and the big ass bag of charcoal.

1968 Trailer. I'm not sure what it was orig. designed for. THe wood was all tounge and groove, nice! But you know, I acquired it in late 90's, and have used it for trash since then. It had 6-7 coats of paint, and 40+ years of rust.
I had to cut all the bolts out. Plasma off all the extra wood-type holder bracket thingies. And now I'm sanding.
It's about 95% sanded. I hope to start paint by Thrusday. Then I can concentrate on the actual BBQ portion. I'll get pics soon.
Anything else I can help with?

Hey
I see that you figured out your BBQ problem... But if you need another grill, I have a Weber "Ranch Kettle". It's 38" across... Holds about 50lbs of meat. Let me know, and I'll throw it in the back of the truck.
