Great weather, great people, and a great event! What a great fawking time!!! Dave, you are THE MAN for putting this together! It was truly a history making event, just the first of many more to come!
So, now that it's over, and hindsight is 20/20, what worked, what didn't? What did you like, not like, what new ideas do we have?
My thoughts:
1. More crappers, and let's have them pumped out Saturday while everybody is out on the runs.
2. Food tickets, instead of feeding everybody. This would limit our costs, allowing us to serve even better food, and make planning and preparing much easier.
3. The raffle was fawking great! Lot's of desireable prizes, and the pace kept things moving. MD is the MC from now on. The sponsors we had stepped up in a big way, going above and beyond what I expected. But I would like to see a couple of big prizes in there next year. Maybe a winch and a set of tires, if we can get a sponsor to pay for them. Since we have a lot more time to plan and prepare, I don't think that will be a problem.
Your thoughts and comments?

Let's see about getting addresses of the registered so that we can send them an early registration form for next year.
As big of a hit it was I think there will be more sponsors next year.
Agree on the crappers and on meal tickets.
We also need to see about getting maps and directions to the lake bed and from the lake bed to the trails(include them in the pre-registration packages and on-site registration packages)
Maybe we can give away some free entrys to The 2nd Annual Tin Bender Jamboree at TDS.
Also lets get more publicity out there next year.

I just want to say, i had an exellent time. Thank you for organizing such a bitchin' event. Now that i have that out of the way, i can make some "remarks".
1. I dont know how much the general raffle tickets cost, but you guys didnt sell enough of them. After hearing the numbers, i figured you had about 150 tickets in your bucket. I think if you start the raffle later, and annouce it once or twice, itll get better sales.
2. Nothing planned for Sunday? No ARCA competition or anything. People just packed up and went home. Maybe a small crawl would fill in the morning.
3. Idiots Love Fire. the bon-fire was cool, but the idiots with the tuna can were just retarded. And the Bomb that almost injured that dog wasnt cool. The gasoline bottle bombs were great, but the idiots who were tossing on the wood sometimes would tip them over, and then you had a flame thrower pointed at the crowd.
I think that all i have now. Overall, it was well organized, great people, and great fun.

WF -
1) 1 Ticket per registration. You can't buy our raffle. And hey, why would you complain, it only helps your odds.
2) Nothing for Sunday. People had too much fun Saturday and liked to sleep in on Sunday. Also, permits weren't available, there was a Bike Race Sunday that had a permit for a large chunk of area by us, but they had 400-500 bikes, and were running 90mph. We don't/didn't want to get in their way.
3) Chicken of the Sea is a typical fire-time event. No one asked you to join. As for the Loud bang that scared Marlin, it was only that. A Piece of 5" steel bored 1.5" and filled with Black powder. Make a nice loud boom, but no projectile except the smallpaper wad to hold in the powder. I don't know whose it was, but it was pretty neat. I think it's noise intesity caught a bunch of people off-guard. Understandable considered we've enever seen anything like it before. And as for Marlin, he's always next to the explosion, there's nothing you can do about that dog. He was ok, and returned immediately to camp ;)
Thanks for the input!

Next year there will be more;
Crappers
A dumpster
Meal tickets with each entry (probably two), and more availible for purchase.
A big map near regristration showing GPS coords for the entry/exit of each trail. We'll also have a map in each entry package.
I'm sure I'll think of more stuff....

I also want to make very clear that that cannon thing WAS NOT the Tin Benders. We don't know who it was, but he was asked to stop after that first shot.
I will say it was pretty cool, and in a smaller group with some advance warning would be fun :D

But the guy was really cool about it. Enough people were concerned, and asked to not fire it off again, he was more than happy to stop.

since this a review, I've already told most of you what I saw and heard from around the camp. everyone had fun, and enjoyed themselves that I talked to.
a dumpster or even a bunch of barrels or those cardboard boxes like at concerts would be good to help keep things clean. I wasnt up early enough to see how the main area was in the morning, by the time I got there, Phil and Shelly were already almost done.
Only real suggestion I can offer is, since next year will probably have more people, and more on each trail, try to maybe break them up in to two groups for each trail with 15 or more rigs. I know krusty, who had quite a group on his, didn't have much in the way of breakage, but it was just really slow going with that many. maybe 2 groups when have been easier. have the 'early' group leave at say 8 am and the 'late group leave at 10am. that might make things easier.
also, just from what I saw/heard on aftershock, and I'm sure some of you saw, there were a couple of areas on the trails that had changed that no one realized that wouldn't allow for some vehiels to pass. since you've got alot more time to prepare next time, a prerun for the trail leaders should tried to be fit in a couple of weeks before.
thanks for the great weekend!!!!

I agree on meal tickets. I also plan on starting the planning a lot earlier. I assume that I'll do it again next year, because...well, we all know I will! Shopping for food will be a one time thing...no multiple trips into town, spending way too much for $hit that could have been bought cheaper. The menu will probably be adjusted for next year. No beans! But something more that just a bag of chips. Next year I'll try to make it out earlier, so I can just come out and do the shopping ahead of time.
As far as the trails, its hard for me to say because I was in camp, but I think if someone escorts someone back from the trail they need to go back out to see if any other help is needed, not just stay back. Hopefully the radio's will be locked on next year so that camp can be in touch with the trail leaders. I also think that there needs to be a list of each frequency for each leaders radio. Maybe mark the way to the trails for those people that get a late start on the trail?
Thats it for now...I'm sure I'll think of more later!

Desert Jeepin,
To respond:
1. I was looking out for the "cause". More money could have been raised if raffle tickets were available. I won disc brake brackets, and i never win anything.
2. Oh well, a short run would have been nice, but we have to share the desert.
3. Explain what the "chicken of the sea" is about. As i understand it, the can explodes and sculding hot tuna gets sprayed on someones back. Also, when the can exploded, something flew(the can maybe) over the crowd's heads toward the trailers. I liked the cannon, but the dog should have been restrained.
I'll post pictures from Aftershock on my website. The website will be up this evening. Large 1200x 800 pics are available if anyone wants them. www.geocities.com/whizkeyfox/johnson (http://www.geocities.com/whizkeyfox/johnson)

Thanks for the photos!
I understand selling tickets equals more money, but we have to and want to keep it fair as possible for everyone. Did you notice that the Tin Benders chose to not participate? By limiting 1 ticket per entry we help keep scrutany to a minimum, Prize odds are better, and all in all I feel people have a better time. Quite a large percentage of our income was attributed to T-Shirt Sales, Hendricks Chassis ticket sales, Vendor advertising as well as Straight up donations.
Chicken of the Sea began a few years back and started by someone throwing something in the fire, and then daring other people to sit next to you while it explodes. As the games was initally playing out, for the first time, the dares went back and forth to see who would skoot closest, then once you are basically on top of it, all you have to wager is what you have on for protection. Then shirt, pants and what ever else starts to come off, and eventually the thing explodes. We call the game Chicken of the Sea for a couple reasons. First off, it's like a game of Chicken. Second, it is what the game was first played with, and second, of all teh other products tried, it works the best. ;)

I have been on wheelin trips with Marlin the wonder dog many times over the past years--- the pooch is a pyro !!- eats embers as they fly off the fires, will chase and retreive ANYTHING thrown for him,(1/2 full plastic water bottles are one of the favorites), has the timeing of 'micky bombs' down to a science-- will circle the fire as it roars and will freeze as it explodes !!
I don't think that ANYTHING COULD keep Marlin away from the fire and any attempt to do so would fall under 'crulity toward animals' (he loves fires more than most folks !!!)
The Benders ARE and have always been a family oriented bunch-- kids , wives, girlfriends, GRAND KIDS, Moms and Dads, and our dogs ---
the campfire antics are done at a time when the kids have gone to bed and allow 'mom and dad' to have a bit of fun-- partispation is OPTIONAL for anyone and NO ONE is forced to join in--NO ONE is forced to spectate.
GRANTED; some times, some of the 'games' get a bit carried away---- but the Benders are not a faint-hearted bunch- I was surprized at the restraint shown by those that did join in !!!! (ie: Garbonzo Beans and Peach slices are great in the fire-about 100' range--- but do carry into the crowd of spectators) !!
YES-- we have rolled a car- we have seen how far we could jump a car-- (built for the occasion with all the roll cage protection)---(the car was hauled back to Ridgecrest to Pearsons Auto Recycleing).
We have been known to have imported a live band from Hollywood to play at the Hammers---
We have been known to have set up a Jello Wrestlin pit----
we have had a 'Marty-gras' theme at one occasion--------
But because of the size of the crowd and not wanting to offend any one,---the general tone was rather subdued !!!!
we wheel hard- we play hard- we enjoy life

As jeepskickass said, hindsight is 20/20. And as i look back, the uncomfortable bon-fire setting could have been alot more fun with alittle bit of planing. i know i sound like a little bitch when i complain, but we're all there to have a good time, and nobody likes to see anyone get mamed.
The canon "suprise" could have been avoided by someone yelling "THIS IS LOUD".
I was even more disturbed about something i just heard from my neighbor. I dont know who it was, or how accurate i discribe it (it happened after i left the fire), but my friend told me that someone was jumping the fire with a dirt bike. I'm assuming they were using the RTI ramp or something. Any ways, nobody bothered to clear the landing area, and the rider and bike came within "1 1/2 feet" of wiping out 2 of my friends and 5 others standing around. My friend gave him the look of "WHAT THE FUCK" and the rider just said, "Somebody dared me". Excuse me if im wrong, but that just seems irresponsible. 2 more feet and i would be able to watch my friend on "Real TV". Anyone could have asked them to clear out the area, but instead they endangered spectators.
BTW> Im over the whole dog thing. I highly respect Krusty for the old timer he is, and if he says the dog likes it, im taking it as gospel.

I was not around the fire 100% of the time, but I'm pretty certain that no one jumped a bike off of the RTI ramp. Nobody endangered the life of Marlin the Crack Head dog and no dolphins were injured in the catching of the Tuna that eventually blew up on Flashes back.
Not a single Bender brought a motorcycle to the Hammers. I'm really sorry that you didn't feel comfortable, but it was not for a lack of trying on our part.

The guy on the dirt bike(trials bike) was dared to jump the fire by me. He didn't really jump it more like a bunny hop over it or rode through it. I said hey can you jump over the fire, because this guy said he was the best at riding trials  , and not even 5 seconds after saying this he took off. He alomost hit someone but it wasn't like he was doing a 100 mph, he started his bike and took off from about 4 feet from the fire, so he wasn't going to fast. He jumped the fire once. Then I dared him to jump onto Flashes hood :D and the entertainment began.
After multiple attempts I came to the conclusion this guy wasn't as good as he said he was. :D
No he wasn't jumping off the RTI ramp, and your friend if he would have gotten hit he probably would have been pissed off more than hurt, if hurt at all. No Real TV stuff there.

Thanks TinBenders for one hell of a trip! Outer Limits was a step up for me- had a great time. Only have a little minor damage to repair, I made it thru pretty clean.
I was the guy w/ the cannon- it's as safe or safer than a Micky's bomb, just very, very loud. That was about a half load of Pyrodex (a black powder replacement that's safer) only about 4 Oz. in volume and 4 paper towels packed on top. I selected not to use a full power charge in proximity to that many folks....Re:Todd has seen it w/ a full load at Table Mesa :D
FYI: I looked for Marlin prior to TinBender lighting the fuze. He was not in sight- Marlin came outta nowhere when he saw the sputtering from the fuze. Like normal, he would not be called off.
Thanks again for a great event-

Lets try to remember that not EVERYONE in the Bender camp actually IS a Bender. They can't watch and control everyone all the time, although they do their best to try. I've been around them for years now and I have NEVER felt that I was in danger...not even when I rode with Tin Bender! I have seen them remove people from their camp on occasion and it was because those people were doing something to possibly harm others. If they felt something was out of control or putting others in danger, they would have stopped it. Well..they should have probably paid more attention when agreeing to allow me to drive some of their rigs this past weekend, but they've learned their lesson now! LOL (Sorry Phil!!) They are probably more aware of how things that happen in their camp can affect things long term than many others are. They've dealt with a wronged reputation for so long that they are VERY on top of things! And with that I'll shut up and eat more candy that Phil gave me! :D How cool is it when you break someone's Jeep and they STILL give you candy!!! Yea!!!! :D

definatly between the maps and maybe some sort of flagging along the main road for thoses that aren't familiar with the trail, would definatly help. and not require a escort all the way back to camp.
I think next year, you guys will have it all hammerd out. I know that for example on friday, there would have been pleanty of time for a couple of us to run the main road out and mark it. but, none of us thought about it.
oh well thanks for the fun and great time.

The main entrance to Means Dry Lake bed from 18/247, WAS marked !!!!!! at every questionable turn on the road in- it WAS marked,
The trail/road to/from AfterShock WAS marked.
I ran the road to/from the bottom/entrance to AfterShock on friday afternoon to see if I could find it-- and for radio check--and marked trail so I could find it again Saturday(as my passenger noted on the way out)----
the Radio (RACE) worked GREAT from AfterShock til someone changed the freq on transmit and the 'power settings' !!!(I could receive but transmit was on a different freq) as in 'repeater mode", and power out was on 'low'--
receive on 157.515--- but the transmit was 160.XXX and I didn't see it til we had 'problems' and I was trying to get connected to base camp.
Directions to the Lake and site WERE posted -- from the north/east/west-- weeks ,on three forums----
Start times in approx, were also posted. on forums and on site--
IF 200+ folks managed to find us --ON TIME-----
what could we do for the ONE that didn't ??????
NO ONE went away hungry
NO ONE was left out in the boonies on any trail
NO ONE was hurt (except our own at their own free will).
the suggestions/crying bout the "coulda-woulda-iffa-likta-whydontcha"------well, never mind, i won't go there!
I didn't 'pre-run' the trail for three reasons-
1- it looked good and was, (except for 100' for two rigs)
2- I was alone-
3- didnt want to risk breaking my shiet the 'nite before'and not make the 'lead'--
(I posted-- "bring drinks, and food 'snacks' at least"---- there were two rigs without either and had sick peoples aboard with no liquids!!)
I went thru 1 ice chest full of drinks and 1/2 of another, gave out three cans of Pringles, and two packages of jerky, handed out three packs of smokes to those that were ill-prepaired---- carried three first aid kits, four fire extinguishers, three tow straps, and a winch---- DROVE all obsticals(til the last) and spotted those behind me that wished to be.
of the three rigs that were 'in charge'-thru the convoy-- all three escorted vehicles at various times -( broke to camp, didn't wanna go further, and made it thru)---- all with communications/and co-ordinations-----(with final overview of another rig doing 'trail-clean-up/rescue')--------

Krusty,
You also might want to note that everyone got off the trail with out major body damage. There were a few trucks that got the back of their beds dented alittle, but even the Tundra's body made it of unscaved. That was impressive. No crushed doors, no dented fenders or quarterpanals; The trail was alittle bit long, but overall an excellent and challenging trail.

Krusty, I didn't mean to say that you did anything wrong. I was just offering suggestions to make it easier for next year. I do remember seeing some pink flagging along the main road, but I didn't know that was put there to mark that road.
I know that '1badrocktoy' was with you in the middle of the pack, and helping spot some of those folks though also. and when I brought the first rig back, the toy with the mustang 5.0 was gonna help bring up the rear. (I'm guessing they did, I don't know though)
you worked your tail off to make sure no one broke on that trail, and you did a great job. Running the trail beforehand was just a suggestion, that's all, it wasn't a dig at you. I just remembered you saying that it had changed quite a bit and was harder to get through that left turn climb.
once again I was just offering up suggestions thats all.

I was the Tail gunner in the 5.0 liter 4runner, Surveyboy. My radio crapped out for about an hour on the trail so i had no communication. I kept expecting you to catch up with us, but you never did. About 7 or 8 of us actually made it thru the trail. I think everyone who made it had dual lockers, im not sure thou. I had trouble clearing the last squeeze. Maybe next year you can set up a "safe zone" across the lake bed for the people that want to circle around the flash light to hold hands and sing. Just be sure they have proper lighting so they don't trip or anything serious, it is dangerous out there you know.
Thanks guys, your awesome!
PS- I did notice that the benders did not participate in the raffle. Very admerable!

Hey guys, I had to chime in. The event went great. I enjoyed the antics around the campfire, especially the rollover contest (how come no one could do more than go over onto their top?), and went to bed when i got tired of them. You made sure people got off the trail, and the raffle goodies didn't go to the guys with the most money for tickets.
A thought on the radios - ham is way cheaper than the race radios, and with the repeater on Keller peak, you can talk from the back side of the mountain to camp, or even into LA, all day long, no worries.
I don't think you have to worry about getting some tri-tip or other $$$$ food, the burgers were great, they fed me fine and I didn't have to cook. The best way to "camp".
Thanks so much for putting on the event. We've got a huge battle ahead of us, and lawyers cost big bucks. I can talk Jeep, a little Toyota, and a lot of finance, but I don't talk lawyer, so we have to hire it done. This event, and the TinBenders, have made a huge contribution not just in dollars, but in moral support. Thank you!

No problem Mike. If you didn't know this, the Benders consider Surprise our home trail. We'll be there to help get it opened again.

Mike-- most of the 'race' radios used were 2m ham--- but to use those that were crystal, and used for race rigs, we went up to other freq's. but your right !- the 50/75watt radio's are the way to go !!!!
