View Full Version : What run can I do in my IFS rig?

I've never been to Johnson Valley and I'm very interested in getting into a big organized Toyota run like this one. I heard about the event on the 4x4wire.com bulleton board and figured I'd come here for more info.

My rig is an '86 4Runner, 4" trailmaster IFS, 22RE/5spd, 5.29s, Detroit locker in rear (open front), 33" BFG/ATs. Not much else except I'll be building some body protection over the next couple weeks.

I'd like to know what runs are doable for me. I heard about the SUV run, but I'm hoping for a bit more challenge than just dirt roads and short hillclimbs. Is there another run I could make? From looking at the signup list it looks like the Aftershock is the next step up in difficulty, but I'm worried my shorter tires and IFS may limit me. What do you think?

I am coming from Central California; when do I need to get there and when are the organized runs? Should I get there Friday night? Earlier? Later? Anything special I need to bring?

Thanks for any info you have to offer. I hope to see over 100 Toyotas later this month smile.gif

the open front makes for a bit of a challenge on any of the harder runs..

Get a locker for the front, but come out anyways and run the SUV run on Saturday, you will have fun guarenteed. You should probably make it there Friday noonish time to get everything taken care of and set up. You will want either shade or sunblock(extually both), it will be hot.

If you have either experience in the rocks or spares (or both) you'll be fine on Aftershock. I ran claw when I was still IFS but that was long time ago and it also wasn't with 20 rigs on the trail.

Plan on getting there in the afternoon on Friday. Alot of us will be out early in the week, and if you want to push your luck smile.gif , I'll take you up any trail you want.

I appreciate the responses. I considered doing a locker up front, but I figured that's another couple hundred that can go toward a solid axle swap or dual case setup in the future. Perhaps I shouldn't attempt the rougher organized runs, but instead go out exploring with smaller, unofficial groups along with doing the SUV run.

Everyone I've talked to about this run has offered to show me the way, hand me a beer, or otherwise make me feel included and welcome to go on this trip. I really appreciate the comradory and I think just considering how people have been treating me on this message boards I couldn't possibly show up without having a great time. I will put in my registration in the next few days and order up one of those hot Toy Jambo t-shirts smile.gif

Bandit--- there are several Bender rigs in the SLO area !!!!!! SLO/Morro/Atascadero/Santa Marguerita-----
Wrecking Ball has been done with IFS on 33"-- MINOR body damage--(Art did it IFS-33", with just a broke tail lite, doors removed) AfterShock -IFS-33"- passenger door removed--- SLIGHT chance of a 'scrape' on the right 'b'pillar post.
With a welded front diff-- (no $$$)- you could do Outter Limits and several others--- just depends on the size of your 'wavoos' !
Come on out---- it will be fun ,no matter if you just play in the bomb craters and sand dunes !!!!!
I would recommend comming out Friday sometime---- (just to get a camping spot   )

Aaron: I haven't joined any local clubs yet. I figured my rig was pretty sissified before the gear and locker swap, which I did last week. I've been around 'wheelin' most of my life, but this is my first rig. I am 20 and I've had the 'runner for about a year. Are you from Atascadero? If so, are there any good clubs around here, especially Toyota oriented?

Krusty: Thanks for the encouragement. I think I will do the SUV thing and see what kinda trouble I can get into afterwards. The SUV trailleader mentioned we might see parts of the Fischer mountain trail if it looks passable by stock rigs. I will keep my fingers crossed, as he says it should be a bit more challenging.

I live in Atascadero

4 clubs in the area that I know of....The Pack,SLO 4wheelers(old jeepers),Gold Coast 4wheelers and Poly Goats....

I'd say the poly goats are the only ones that wheel real trails

lots of cool toyota guys that arent in a club

Bandit--- if you are locked in the rear-- and do the SUV run----- your biggest problem will be,------ trying to stay awake !!
At the Hammers-- the trails are like no other anywhere !!- and I would NOT recommend a nite run for your intro to the Hammers !!!!!!!
it is bad enough when you can see where you are TRYING to go in full daylite -- but in the dark ??!!!!!

these smartalickie new Bender kids---- noisey bunch !!!!
